2022 Report to the community

Last century's infrastructure becomes today's linear park

Letter from the Leadership

At 71 miles and 860 acres, enhancing the Canal is such smart urban planning. It’s a way to find remnants of land in densely urbanized communities and use them for multiple purposes that benefit so many people.

Mission

The mission of the Conservancy is to preserve, protect and enhance the 71-mile High Line Canal, in partnership with the public.

Mission

The mission of the Conservancy is to preserve, protect and enhance the 71-mile High Line Canal, in partnership with the public.

Commitment to Equity

The Conservancy is using a community- and equity-centered approach across the Canal to implement high-priority trail improvement projects. The Conservancy wants to ensure that all people of the region – considering, but not limited to, race, ethnicity, economics, age, geography, ability, and sexual orientation – have access to a safe and welcoming outdoor space to support healthy lifestyles, improve the natural environment and connect with the outdoors. Along the northern 28 miles of the High Line Canal in unincorporated Arapahoe County, Denver and Aurora, defined as the “Northeast,” the Canal moves through diverse neighborhoods.

The Conservancy recognizes that for all communities to benefit from the Canal as a recreational and ecological resource, the Conservancy needs to focus on overcoming inequities due to factors including historical underinvestment in Black, Latino and immigrant communities, barriers to access for low-income neighborhoods and people with disabilities, and a lack of adequate representation of all residents within community engagement efforts. As part of a larger effort to address these inequities, the Conservancy launched the Northeast Steering Committee in 2022. This committee is leading the way to deeply engage with community members from more than 15 neighborhoods along the Northeast sections of the Canal to co-design enhancements so that future improvements are of, by and for the community. Key accomplishments include:

  • 7 committee members representing neighborhoods from across the Northeast
  • 8 focus groups held with 40 participants hosted by partners Lacy Consulting Services
  • 40 Canal-focused programs in the Northeast

Walk FOR the Canal

A WEEK OF FAMILY-FRIENDLY ACTIVITIES

The Conservancy held the third annual Walk FOR the Canal in 2022, presented by the Friedman Family Foundation. The Conservancy hosted a week-long fundraiser full of themed walks and events with multiple partners including Denver Botanic Gardens, Denver By Foot, Environmental Learning for Kids, The Park People, Sand Creek Regional Greenway Partnership, Windsor Gardens and volunteer leaders. Together with the Canal community, the Conservancy explored, shared stories and got moving to raise over $140,000 to help protect the Canal – thank you!

Dine for the High Line

A GRAND RETURN

After a four-year hiatus, Dine for the High Line returned in 2022 – in a big way! Presented by Arapahoe County Open Spaces, over 360 attendees gathered at the Conservancy’s new headquarters along the Canal to learn, dine and celebrate under a starry September night. Guests learned about the Canal’s history, encountered native wildlife, viewed locally-made art and learned about the Conservancy’s past, present and future work. Then, everyone came together to enjoy a Colorado-inspired feast and celebrate the leaders who have helped to shape the vision of the High Line Canal. A big thank you to our Dine Committee and amazing volunteers who ensured this night’s success!

Also, we’d like to highlight that the 2022 High Line Hero Award went to Arapahoe County Commissioners and Arapahoe County Open Spaces Director Shannon Carter and the 2022 Nina Beardsley Itin Volunteer Impact Award went to Karl Friedman and the Friedman Family Foundation.

Programs

FREE FAMILY-FRIENDLY PROGRAMMING FOR THE ENTIRE COMMUNITY

Programs along the Canal were abundant in 2022, connecting community members to nature through recreational, educational and stewardship events – with the addition of new community science events this year. The Conservancy offers free programming throughout the year, often with partners. At the various programs, attendees learned about the Canal’s history, cared for the Canal, got some exercise, connected with fellow community members and more!

Canal Stewardship

THE POWER OF THE CANAL CONSERVATION CORPS

The Canal Conservation Corps (CCC) harnesses the commitment of community members from across the region, enabling and inspiring them to work together to enhance the Canal’s ecological health, safety and future vitality. In 2022 there was great growth for the CCC, which has significantly increased the Conservancy’s capacity to steward the Canal’s environment, helping plants and wildlife to thrive and creating a safe, enjoyable experience for trail users.

Throughout the summer, 23 trained Corps Leaders demonstrated their skills and leadership by supporting and leading stewardship events. Corps Leaders completed site assessments prior to stewardship events, led cleanups along the trail and learned how to lead brush removals from Corps Leader Einar Jensen and South Metro Fire Rescue volunteers.

In 2022, Independent Cleanup volunteers significantly increased the amount of trash removed from the Canal. Partner Spotlight

MILE HIGH YOUTH CORPS

The Conservancy partnered with Mile High Youth Corps (MHYC) to perform eight weeks of Russian olive removal along the Canal over spring and summer. This project greatly advanced our work to protect and restore the Canal’s canopy as Russian olive is a state-regulated invasive species that competes with trees and desired vegetation for scarce water resources. During the eight-week project MHYC inventoried and removed 392 Russian olives across 20.5 miles of Canal corridor in Denver, unincorporated Arapahoe County, Centennial, and Greenwood Village. Mitigation of the Russian olive infestation along the corridor will continue in the coming years in partnership with MHYC.

Trail Improvements & Canal Collaborative

Canal Collaborative

SECURING A SUSTAINABLE, LONG-TERM FUTURE FOR THE CANAL

Thirteen partners from across the region have come together to secure a sustainable, long-term future for all 71 miles.

The Canal Collaborative was formally launched in January of 2022 with the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding by all Canal Collaborative partners, which was celebrated during our first annual State of the Canal.

In 2022, the Canal Collaborative brought together leaders from across the region to advance permanent protection of the Canal as a recreational and ecological resource. This includes commitments to care for the corridor as Denver Water reduces its reliance on the Canal for irrigation delivery and local communities embrace the Canal’s potential as green stormwater infrastructure. While improvement projects continue to enhance the user experience on the Canal, these partners are rolling up their sleeves to evaluate the Canal’s existing conditions, project future maintenance needs and forge new partnerships to preserve and protect the Canal for future generations.

Signage & Wayfinding

NAVIGATION IS GETTING EASIER

The Plan for the High Line Canal established a Canal-wide sign package to help users find their way across all 71 miles. In 2022, the Conservancy installed 81 new signs along the Canal. Meet some of the new High Line Canal wayfinding signs!
